Most Brutal Deaths on ‘Game of Thrones’ Throughout Seven Seasons
From meeting their ends by getting beheaded to being burned alive, here are the most gruesome deaths which queasy viewers of the hit HBO series find hard to watch.
Apr 14, 2019
“Game of Thrones” season 8 will arrive in hours, and fans’ anticipation for the eighth and final season of the hit HBO series is definitely growing with every minute. A lot of questions are probably waiting to be answered, including who will survive the final war or who will be among the fallen victim of the show’s gruesome death storylines.
Fans of the cult series surely are not stranger to see bloody and brutal casualties throughout the seven seasons. If anything, it seems like the bloodier the deaths are, the better.
The series saw characters meeting their ends in such brutal ways including getting beheaded, burned alive as well as eaten alive. But which deaths are the most disturbing and gory? Before the culmination begins on April 14 on HBO, let’s take a look back at the most brutal deaths on the fantasy series.
1. Ramsay Snow
Ramsay Snow’s (Iwan Rheon) death is probably one of the most satisfying deaths on the series. The despicable character got on fans’ nerves due to how merciless he was with others. He even left his stepmother and baby stepbrother to get eaten by his hounds before.
However, fans got something to celebrate in episode 9 of season 6 as Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), whom he was raped, got to take a revenge on him following his defeat at the Battle of Bastards against Jon Snow (Kit Harington). Instead of killing him directly, Sansa chose an epic way to kill him by leaving him to be eaten by his own hounds.
Heartbreakingly brutal is probably the most appropriate term to describe Shae’s (Sibel Kekilli) death. Although it’s not bloody, being killed by your loved one or having to kill your loved one is painful enough.
Shae met her demise in episode 10 of season 4. Titled “The Children”, the episode saw Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) strangling her to death on the bed after he discovered that she slept with his father Tywin. Although Kekilli said that she and Dinklage didn’t rehearse the emotional scene, fans could see how much Tyrion was struggling because he still loved Shae despite her epic betrayal.
3. Viserys Targaryen
Another satisfying death would be Viserys Targaryen’s (Harry Lloyd). The brother of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) died early in season 1 at the hands of Dany’s then-husband Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa).
The episode’s title, “A Golden Crown”, was a nod to his brutal death in the Dothraki holy city. The Beggar King finally received his “golden crown” in a way he would never imagine. After he went against the city’s rule by drunkenly unsheating his sword, he was punished to death as Drogo poured the molten gold onto Viserys’s head, leaving him dying in agony in front of Dany’s eyes.
4. Ned Stark
Gone too soon! In the early episodes of season 1, Ned Stark (Sean Bean) was appointed as the Hand of the King to King Robert Baratheon. Fans might think that the Lord of Winterfell would go powerful in King’s Landing, that until the throne fell to Robert and Cersei Lannister’s (Lena Headey) eldest son Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson).
He was falsely accused of treason after trying to arrest Cersei and her children for murdering Robert. He did confess to the treason. However, that was only because Varys told him that if he confessed and ordered Robb Stark to stand down, he would be spared and sent to the Night’s Watch and Sansa’s safety was guaranteed. However, with Joffrey being the King, that was not the case. Ned was beheaded in public, and the young king even made sure that Sansa witness his dad’s death.
5. Walder Frey
Season 6 concluded with the epic death of Walder Frey. He died at the hands of none other than Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), who came to avenge the deaths of her mother Catelynn Stark, brother Robb and his pregnant wife Talissa who were assassinated by Frey at the infamous Red Wedding.
Arya used her ability to take appearance of others and disguised herself as a serving girl before revealing her true identity. She slit the Lord of Crossing’s throat mercilessly at his own table. As if that was not enough, she made him unknowingly eat a pie which was made out of his two sons — Black Walder and Lothar.
6. Joffrey Baratheon
Joffrey’s death was another demise to celebrate. In the second episode of season 4, the King was murdered at his own wedding feast to his new queen, Margaery Tyrell, right before his mother Cersei’s eyes and everyone else.
Joffrey died after drinking a wine, which had been poisoned by Olenna Tyrell and Littlefinger, from Tyrion. His death scene, known as The Purple Wedding, featured his face turning bloodstained purple while his discolored eyes stared creepily into the camera. Carsei, on the other hand, screamed in agony upon her son’s death.
7. Oberyn Martell
One will agree that Oberyn Martell’s (Pedro Pascal) death is the most disturbing to watch. He died at the hands of The Mountain in Tyrion’s trial by combat back in a season 4 episode titled “The Mountain and the Viper”.
The Red Viper was initially winning the combat, but he got ahead of himself and was caught off guard when The Mountain rose and attacked Oberyn who was busy making a celebratory ceremony. His bigger opponent easily took him down before crushing his skull into pieces with his bare hands.
8. Catelyn, Robb and Talisa Stark
You have to include the Red Wedding when it comes to the most brutal deaths on “Game of Thrones”. Weddings are supposed to be a happy occasion, but Robb and Talisa’s took a bloody turn after Catelyn realized that they were being lured into a planned massacre by Walder Frey and the Lannisters.
She tried to warn Robb but was too late as Lothar Frey approached Talisa, who was pregnant with her and Robb’s child, from behind and repeatedly stabbed her in the abdomen with a dagger. Robb, who witnessed the death of his wife and his unborn child, was too stunned to react and that was when the musicians revealed their crossbows and fired on Robb. Catelyn’s death was also a challenge for those who have weak stomach. Her throat was slit by Black Walder with blood spilling out of her throat.
9. Shireen Baratheon
Shireen Baratheon’s death is just too painful to watch. The little princess, who was the only surviving child of Stannis and Selyse Baratheon, died because of his father’s greed of power.
After being convinced by Melisandre, Stannis ordered his soldiers to burn his own daughter alive as she was being sacrificed to the Lord of Light. Dragged and tied forcefully by Baratheon soldiers, Shireen was burned alive in front of her parents who initially showed no sign of mercy despite her scream for help. However, Selyse later attempted to help her daughter only to get held back by soldiers, while Stannis was seen looking away with tears in his eyes.
10. Meryn Trant
After the hardships, Arya grew into someone whose main goals were taking revenge on those who killed her beloved ones. Meryn Trant (Ian Beattie) was among the list of people that Arya was determined to kill, and she did it mercilessly in episode 10 of season 5.
Meryn, who murdered Arya’s friend and teacher Syrio Forel, got stabbed multiple times in each eye. Not satisfied enough, Arya stuffed his mouth with a cloth before she revealed her identity and proceeded to slit his throat painfully slowly. For queasy viewers, the scene was hard to watch as it featured Meryn, with his eyes gouged, spilling out more blood from his throat.
Mago was only a minor character on “Game of Thrones”, but the way he died was one of the most grossest and goriest deaths in the show’s history. Played by Ivailo Dimitrov, the character defied Daenerys and challenged Khal Drogo for a fight, not knowing that he had to pay the price for such action with his life.
Almost not surprisingly, Drogo won the fight but he wouldn’t let Mago die easily. Drogo slit Mago’s throat to two pieces by his own weapon and got Mogo’s entire tongue ripped out of his body.
Petyr Baelish a.k.a. Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) spent his entire time on the series manipulating others. And his death in episode 7 of season 7 was definitely one that no one would miss. Following the reunion of Sansa and Arya in the season, Littlefinger appeared to be wary about his position. He tried to make Sansa and Arya go against each other by incriminating Sansa in the whole “Ned Stark beheading” situation so that Arya might kill Sansa for betraying her family.
Fortunately, the Stark girls had experienced so much that they didn’t fall for Littlefinger’s trick. He pathetically cried and begged for mercy to no avail. Following the instruction of the Lady of Winterfell, Arya slit Littlefinger’s throat with the catspaw dagger without even blinking.
